Yacht Charter Greece & Sailing Vacation Guide

Hopefully, you’ll be the next to witness the Greek hospitality and explore the beautiful islands of the country. Here’s some information about the country itself and the various island groups you can visit…

About GreeceGreece's Flag

Greece is one of the top yachting destinations in the world for a good number of various reasons. The country is widely known for its rich history and culture being the birthplace of Democracy, the Olympic Games and other fundamental western civilization traits. The country is located in the southern part of the Balkans and its mainland is a mountainous peninsula, more or less. However, the country is widely projecting into the sea; the Greek shores are about 10.000 miles long. The nation is highly dependent on its seas and unique geographic location. Greece has always been a world wide leader in naval transportation while maintaining its status as a top tourist destination in the region.

The Islands

The country has approximately 1.400 islands to explore in the Aegean and Ionian sea. This is mostly what makes Greece a top yachting destination. Each island has a unique character, its own flavors and attractions to explore. Quite a lot of them are rich in Classical era ruins as well as Christian – Orthodox, Venetian and Ottoman attractions from the respective eras in the nation’s history.

Greece’s islands hold many surprises for their explorers. If privacy is what you’re looking for, there are countless beaches and wonderful swimming holes that are only reachable with a boat. Greece yacht charters however, are not all about privacy and relaxing time. The Greek islands are full of coastal (small) cities and villages with a vivid night life should you choose to experience it.

The country’s vast number of islands make it impossible to explore in one visit alone. This is why sailors tend to explore one island group (more about island groups coming up) at a time and come back another year to further explore Greece’s sailing areas.

Yacht Charter Greece Popular Destinations (Island Groups)

A yacht charter in Greece offers thousand (literally) of islands to explore as mentioned already. The Greek islands are divided into groups based on their location. The Greek island Groups are the following:

  • Saronic Islands (Light Green color in the map)
  • Sporades (Red color)
  • Cyclades (Orange color)
  • Dodecanese Islands (Brown color)
  • Ionian Islands (Purple color)
  • Crete (Deep Green color)

Saronic IslandsThe Saronic islands (Σαρωνικός in Greek) are one of Greece’s hidden secrets. They are generally undiscovered by tourism, however, they started to attract attention over the last couple of years. The most notable of them are Aegina (Αίγινα), Aghistri (Αγκίστρι) which is only a couple of minutes away from Aegina, Hydra (Ύδρα), Spetses (Σπέτσες) and Poros (Πόρος). Their sheltered location make them ideal for yacht chartering even at the very last months of summer – time. Their proximity to the capital of Greece, Athens, is a great advantage of this island group, making it ideal for sailors that want to combine their vacation relaxation and thrilling yacht chartering experience with the intense, vivid rhythms of a major European capital city.

Yacht Charter Greece in the SporadesSporades

The Sporades (Σποράδες) island group is located in Greece’s eastern coast. There are eleven (11) islands the sailor can visit, however, only four of them are inhabited. This part of Greece has the bluest and arguably the clearest waters. The inhabited, four islands of the Sporades are the following: Skiathos (Σκιάθος), Skopelos (Σκόπελος), Skyros (Σκύρος) and Alonnisos (Αλόννησος). All of them are unexpectedly green; even the beaches are full of vegetation on the contrary to other Aegean sea islands. There are plenty of swimming holes and private beaches to explore as well as great dinning options.

I’ve had an excellent time in the Saronic in my first yacht charter in Greece with my family. I believe it was about five years ago. The sea is great, the people are great, the food is great. Truly, a wonderful country. We may go back this year, hopefully we’ll charter the Ioanian Islands this time.
